Laura Murphy of St Charles, IL Advocates for a Change of Career in mid life.

After ten years of making a living as a technical writer for a software company in Chicago, Laura Murphy of St. Charles, IL felt that a change was on the horizon. As a single mom of two daughters, her career as a technical writer working on manuals was lucrative and convenient. Laura was able to work from home while her two daughters were at school and the salary from this telecommuting opportunity afforded her the necessities she needed while raising the girls on her own.

Laura Murphy St Charles IL enjoyed her job: she was good at producing copy for the manuals, she was efficient and organized, and she earned a salary that afforded her all that she needed to live in the St. Charles area with her two daughters. But something was missing and she wanted to show her daughters that a career could be more than just earning a living.

“At this point, I decided that a career change would be a great option for me. I was ready for a change and I always had an interest in nursing—I just needed to go for it even if it was scary,” she said.

In the fall of 2003, Laura enrolled in the nursing program at St. Charles Community College. She went to school at night while working during the day as a technical writer.

Laura maintains that this period of her life was difficult—juggling a full time job, school, and parenting was a heavy load. But it was also one of the best decisions of her life.

“I look back on that time and know that I made the right decision for myself and my family. I was ready for something new, and going back to school to achieve my goals was one of the best decisions of my life. I would advocate for anyone to make this change—a career change was one of the best things I have ever done for myself and my kids,” said Laura Murphy.
