Former police officer Laura Motes applied to Georgia Regents University in its Master of Science in Nursing program.

Laura Motes applied recently to the Master of Science in Nursing program at the College of Nursing at Georgia Regents University (GRU). Motes is a former police officer who worked for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department for over 20 years. She worked her way to Sergeant and became heavily involved with the department’s handling of many complex criminal cases, as well as its administrative operations. After a long career as a police officer, Motes decided to help her community by providing the best medical care she can give to help others in her community navigate the evermore complex healthcare system in her community.

Laura Motes wanted to become a nurse because she felt that she could help people more directly than ever before. As a police officer, much of her job involved the fair and clear reporting of incidents and the correct filing of police reports so that criminal charges could be pursued and perpetrators of crimes could be detained or otherwise punished. While she loved her job as a police officer in a place she knows very well, she also wanted to broaden her horizons by branching into another form of community involvement. She also knew that the healthcare industry was booming around the country, and that more nurses were needed to help satisfy demand for increased medical care.

Laura Motes wanted to attend the College of Nursing at GRU because of its many nationally-recognized nursing programs, including the Master of Nursing program she plans on enrolling in. She applied knowing that there is often stiff competition for spots in the program, but she believes that her background, application materials, and experience working for medical companies from the time she left the police force to the time she applied for nursing school will make her a viable candidate to add to the program’s high-minded mission and practice.

Laura Motes has contributed much to her community already as a police officer, now she wants to help it take care of its people by becoming a nurse. She hopes to become a registered nurse so that she can improve her career and advance far within the healthcare industry to provide excellent medical care to as many people in her community as possible.
