Kellie Irene Flynn announces new adult literacy program for Las Vegas residents

Kellie Irene Flynn is pleased to announce a new adult literacy program sponsored by Nevada Literacy Partners.

The program is bringing adult literacy classes to more Las Vegas residents than ever before. Kellie Irene Flynn, a volunteer with the nonprofit, says the new program will provide highly trained literacy teachers to those residents who need it, at no charge to the learners.

“There are thirty-six million adult Americans reading at the third grade level,” she says. “We don’t have precise numbers for how many of them are here in Las Vegas, but estimate it to be about three thousand people.” Nevada Literacy Partners provides them with basic reading, writing, math, and computer skills.

The number of people who are asking for help with literacy training is higher than ever, she says. But funding for literacy programs has fallen, across the board. “Even when we combine all of our government and philanthropic funding,” says Kellie Irene Flynn, “we don’t have the resources to help everyone who asks us for it. And that just breaks my heart.”

Low literacy rates among American adults is a serious problem, Kellie Irene Flynn says. “People who struggle with their literacy have a very difficult time with things most of us take for granted, like everyday budgeting, and more complicated things like mortgage documents. That makes them vulnerable to predatory lenders and financial scams. Such people are also more likely to be out of work, because they simply lack the skills and training they need to be part of the twenty-first century job market.”

Kellie Irene Flynn says the new Nevada Literacy Partners program is aiming to achieve one hundred percent literacy among adults in the Las Vegas area. “It’s a tall order, but one that we can achieve.” She says that anyone interested in helping the nonprofit can volunteer their time or make a donation, or both. “Just visit our website.”

By training, Kellie Irene Flynn is a dental hygienist who has worked at Downtown Family Dental Partners in Las Vegas for nearly ten years. She is married and the mother of three children, and has been volunteering her time and effort to Nevada Literacy Partners for the last five years.
