Justin McKenzie of WSSU helps organizations improve performance

Justin McKenzie of WSSU has helped numerous organizations improve their performance throughout his professional career, by aligning technology strategies with organizational performance objectives.
Too often, he says, he finds out that in many organizations the IT plan is not in alignment with its overall strategic plan. This is a very inefficient way to work, he says, and costs businesses in lost productivity, scattered work, and redundant efforts.

In order to be truly effective and competitive, says Justin McKenzie of WSSU, technology strategy must be in alignment with business strategy. Both strategies need an integrated, holistic approach. The point of business/IT alignment is to optimize the value that the IT contributes to the enterprise. And an organization has successfully achieved this when there is a shared understanding of how IT applications, technologies and services contribute to the organization's objectives, in both the present and in the future.

The IT and business strategies may also be considered in alignment, says Justin McKenzie of WSSU, when there is a shared focus on where to expend resources, time, and money., and when there is a credible working relationship between the IT department and the rest of the business, as demonstrated by successful daily operations, and the delivery of predictable and innovative solutions.

Justin McKenzie of WSSU recommends setting conditions to achieve alignment, scanning for enabling technologies, determining IT value imperatives, and developing IT vision and mission. After successfully completing the alignment, there will be support from key executives, an understanding of how emerging technologies might or will impact an IT organization, clearer expectations of how IT will contribute to achieving business goals, and a defined articulation of the role of IT to the organization.

Justin McKenzie of WSSU received his education at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Information Systems and a Master's degree in Engineering Technology. He also received a Master of Business Administration from William Carey University. He has more than fifteen years of professional experience in Information Technology, including his tenure as an Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina.
