Judd Lesser Learns Traditional Values in Midwest Before Enrolling at Judaic Yeshiva University for Bachelors and NYU Dental School for Doctorate

Judd Lesser grew up in the American Midwest, a stronghold of traditional values including thrift, a strong work ethic, a devotion to the value of education, a belief in self-reliance and religious tolerance. Lesser’s boyhood was likely steeped in the reverence of Midwesterners for the homespun love of wholesome childhood activities: sports, Little League, fishing, climbing trees and stealing apples. Lesser nonetheless, left his childhood home to pursue his education in the East, enrolling at the private Yeshiva University in New York City to work toward his Bachelor of Arts.

Yeshiva University is a private institution in New York City founded in 1886. A research university, Yeshiva has four campuses offering a dual undergraduate curriculum which combines academic educational principles with the study of the Torah, the central reference of the Judaic tradition. Torah generally refers to both the first five books of the twenty-four books of the Tanakh, and also refers to the instruction and way of life of those who follow the dictates of the Torah. The word Torah can also refer to the totality of Jewish teachings and cultural practice, a set of moral and religious obligations and civil laws.

Rabbinic tradition holds that Torah teachings both written and oral were given by God to Moses, who wrote them down. Most Biblical scholars believe the written teachings came from the exiled period in Babylon, approximately 600 BC. However, the 2004 discoveries of Hebrew Bible fragments which dated to the 7th century BC, sheds new light on much earlier elements of the Torah. Tradition demands that a portion of the Torah is read publicly at least once every three days, from a handwritten scroll of parchment, and in Hebrew. It was out of respect and reverence for the holy traditions of Judaism that Judd Lesser enrolled at Yeshiva University to accomplish the first part of his upper level education.

Judd Lesser would have achieved a high level of academic instruction at Yeshiva, in an environment which respected and preserved the rich Judaic tradition of the Hebrew religion. Judd Lesser achieved his Bachelor of Arts at Yeshiva, and prepared for his dentistry career at New York University’s College of Dentistry.
