The LSUC was created by an act of the Legislative Assembly more than two hundred years ago, in 1797, to ensure that the citizens of Ontario are served by lawyers and paralegals who have met the highest standards of legal education, professional conduct, and professional competence. The Society regulates and licenses the more than forty six thousand lawyers and five thousand licensed paralegals in Ontario, says Jeremy Diamond of Toronto. It also serves the public by offering complaint services, a referral service, and a compensation fund.
