Jean Elaine Leveque left her regular job at a large marketing company in downtown Denver to start her own consultancy. She felt she could create better opportunities for herself as a freelance consultant than by toiling her traditional career track. She has now been an independent marketing consultant for nearly 25 years.

Jean Elaine Leveque had the skill but little of the experience and the network to start her own business nearly 25 years ago. She worked to take on extra responsibility at her old job to build experience and knowledge. She rose eventually to a leadership position, responsible for a small team that worked on various parts of marketing initiatives and campaigns that have won many clients more customers and brought in higher revenue streams. The clients and the marketing initiatives soon began to add up. The way the company was run, it was easier to spread resources around to many different teams and clients at the same time than focus on a few clients at a time. Leveque soon realized that she could start her own consultancy and give her clients the individual attention they need.

Jean Elaine Leveque left her career at the marketing agency soon after it had begun. She knew nothing about running her own business. She knew how to market her services, of course, but her first meeting with the head of marketing for her first client was the first time she took a leadership role in a client meeting. Nonetheless, her first client was impressed by her commitment to service and individual attention, and they signed off on a new marketing campaign she would design herself.

As word spread of her excellent work, Jean Elaine Leveque soon found herself with more clients than she could handle. Despite the strong temptation to take on as many clients as she possibly could in the early days, she turned several prospective clients down, even losing some to the marketing firm at which she worked several years earlier. While she had to turn down some opportunities early on to make sure she could do good work for the clients she already had, she quickly made up ground and found many more clients she could work with.
