Jason Van Der Slot explains why he founded the TP52 Southern Cross Cup.

Jason Van Der Slot wishes to celebrate his founding of the TP52 Southern Cross Cup. He is an expert at sailing as learned to sail when he was a young boy. His family had always enjoyed sailing together, and so Jason Van Der Slot was able to learn a great deal about sailing when he was young. He says, “Even when I was young, I remember enjoying the feeling of sailing on a yacht. It was a lot of fun and very exciting, but it was also a calming experience.”

The TP52 class yacht, or the Transpac 52, is mainly used in competitive sailboat racing. Today, it is in a class of its own, but originally there were only a few loose members who considered themselves to be enthusiasts of the craft. It has grown into an officially registered and ISAF recognized Class that is fully controlled by its members. This means that the Class, that was formerly unorganized, now has an Executive Committee that is entirely composed of the members of the Class. There is also a Class President of the group. Together, the president and the members of class have created a group of bylaws that all members must follow. They discuss these bylaws, and a great deal of other things, during meetings that take place every year. Jason Van Der Slot was one of the founding members of this group. It is known as the Australian TP52 Association. The group was created for owners of the TP52, or those who had owned one of the yachts in the past. However, while members of this group are sailing enthusiasts, and wish to support the TP52, they are not normally sailboat racers themselves.

For those who wish to race the TP52 class yacht, there is the TP52 Southern Cross Cup. This race was founded by Jason Van Der Slot to promote the TP52 and allow for a new kind of sailboat racing. Racers are behind the Southern Cross Cup, as they recognize it as the potential future for sailboat racing. Normally, sailboat racing can take up to 12 hours in a single day, but the Southern Cross Cup only takes up half of the day. This means that sailors can have their fun, but be back home in time for dinner.
