Itziar Camio Discusses Sustainable Agriculture, The Future of Farming

Posted January 20, 2016 by pzmediainc1

Itziar Camio takes a vested interest in international development, and wants to use sustainable agriculture to make the world a better place.

One of the things that Itziar Camio has been learning more about is sustainable agriculture. While trends for going green have become more and more popular, there are still many that don’t really know what sustainable agriculture and farming is all about. The reason that sustainable agriculture is a rather recently coined term is because in the past, there was no need for a distinction between conventional farming and sustainable farming.

In the past the technology simply did not exist for anything other than sustainable agriculture. As improvements were made with conventional farming such as GMO, pesticides, and growth hormones, suddenly conventional farming was drastically different from the farming of the past. While growth hormones, GMO’s, and antibiotics produce more product faster, only now are people beginning to realize the toll that those methods are taking on the environment, as well as the people that consume the food.

Individuals like Itziar Camio have recognized that this uniform farming technique that on the surface seems more efficient, is actually stripping the soil of nutrients, drying up water sources, and killing off local species. Many of the industrial farming methods in use today have no regard for the well-being of the environment, or the people that consume the products. Many studies have found synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and growth hormones to be harmful in people. A good portion have been linked to cancer in multiple studies. It is for that reason that many are starting to look back to older farming methods of the past, where none of these problems existed.

Part of the reason that industrial farming has gotten so out of hand, though science and empirical evidence has made it obvious that it is harmful, is simply a lack of awareness. Many people do not stop to question where their food comes from, how it was made, or what it contains. That kind of blind consumption has caused many to turn a blind eye to these problems. That is why individuals like Itziar Camio are so dedicated to spreading awareness about sustainable farming, and what it can mean for society as a whole.
