Ian Renner of Florida is a real estate investor who lives in Orlando, Florida. He says that he is fortunate to have a really flexible schedule, which allows him the freedom get out of the office a couple of times each week to take long hikes through the network of trails in and around town.

He also enjoys longer hikes, sometimes spending several days along mountain trails. One of his ambitions is to hike the Appalachian Trail, although that is not yet in the planning stages. But Ian Renner of Florida has taken hikes of similar length, once spending a week in the high country of the Rocky Mountains. A trip like that is a much bigger undertaking than any day hike, of course, and he says that careful planning and carrying essential gear is critical to its success.

There are a number of must-have pieces of gear, and Ian Renner of Florida describes them in no particular order of importance. "Shoes," he says. "You have to have a good pair of hiking shoes, or boots. A pair of sneakers or running shoes is okay for a short hike, but you need a sturdier pair for something longer."

Hiking shoes or boots are going to be worn most of the time, he says, but a lot of the gear must be carried. So he says a good backpack is important. As for the gear itself, he says a map and compass are must-haves, and a GPS system is nice but optional. You'll need protection from the sun, so he says to pack sunscreen and lip balm, along with a hat and a pair of sunglasses. If you already wear glasses then bring a prescription pair, if you have one, or some dark, clip-on lenses.

A good jacket is essential, but it's a seasonal thing too, so its weight must be determined by expected weather conditions. Conditions can change unexpectedly though, so you need to have extra clothing in case it gets cold. In addition, bring a flashlight and extra batteries, matches to build a fire, and a First Aid kit.

Hydration is crucial, so Ian Renner of Florida recommends bringing water bottles and water purification tablets. You'll need extra food, a knife, and a tent, of course. "And it all has to fit into your backpack!" he says.
