Heather Rome was a project director for DAI and enjoys using her Spanish and English bilingual skills to meet career goals.

During her time with Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI), Heather Rome had ample opportunities to flex her bilingual muscles. She managed large project portfolios in both Central and South America and frequently traveled there. She has also lived as an expatriate in Spanish speaking countries where she was required to use her bilingual skills on a daily basis for both business and personal endeavors. She has worked as a translator on numerous occasions in a variety of settings, and has taught English to Spanish speaking students. During her years of study and work at DAI and beyond, she found that being bilingual was an enormous help to her daily routine. https://vimeo.com/heatherromedai

There are many benefits to having bilingual communication skills. One of the most remarked upon characteristics of a bilingual individual is that studies have observed that they generally have healthier brains, better memories, and a faster recall. This may often lead to an easier time working out cognitive problem solving tasks and formulating innovative solutions for multilayered tasks. Modern businesses are also increasingly internationally minded, and studies have found that some companies are likely to pay higher salaries for this added skill set. Accordingly, searching for jobs as a bilingual applicant can be more productive, especially if one is looking for a company that currently has or plans to have global business transactions with travel opportunities.

When traveling, for business or for pleasure, having the knack to speak multiple languages is a big help. Even if you only speak English and Spanish, you can find yourself getting along better in France, for example, because Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian and Italian are all romance languages which stem from the same parent dialect of Latin. And although each language has its unique characteristics, there are major grammatical similarities. When Rome was called upon to travel to Eastern Europe for business, she had a much easier time understanding the native tongue in the lands where Latin was a mother language.

Heather Rome discovered, while working with Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI) and others, that being bilingual also provided her with an enhanced perspective regarding the cultural settings of the host regions. All of these experiences have led her to prefer career opportunities that allow her to use her English and Spanish speaking skills.
