Erica Desai, helps patients who are battling cardiovascular disease find hope and a purpose.

For more than two years, Erica Desai has brought new hope to patients who are struggling with chronic and acute conditions. Her upbeat attitude and persistence has made a difference in many of the patients’ lives. She works as a health care professional at Duke University Medical Center, where she works closely with patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. She also helps patients once they are discharged from the hospital, by making arrangements for health care and medical equipment in their homes. According to Desai, “The most important part of my job is to give people hope. I have always wanted to help people and improve the quality of their lives.”

At Duke University Medical Center, they believe that their patients and their families hold the key to successful outcomes. It's necessary to have their participation and active support in the rehabilitation process to make it a success. Upon release, patients will talk with someone like Erica Desai, who will assist them in becoming oriented to health care options once they are discharged. She guides each patient through the release process and helps ensure the most positive outcomes.

Social workers who work in the medical setting are an intricate part of the recovery process. They encourage the patient and their family to participate in conferences and the patient/family education program. They find meeting information on various support groups if requested by the patient or their family. They also give information on health care resources such as home health care, outpatient therapy, assisted living and skilled and/or extended care facilities. Social workers will contact patients and their families regularly to discuss therapy evaluations; goals for therapy; tentative discharge dates;
strengths and barriers to meeting goals, and needs related to returning to your home and community.

Erica Desai always knew from a young age that she wanted to be in a field that helped people in some way. She feels the greatest satisfaction from a job comes from seeing the smile on someone's face or uplifting their spirit if just for a moment. She recently was awarded “Employee of The Month” at Duke University's Medical Center.
