Dylan Bollinger on Importance of Art Education for Children and Teenagers

Recent studies show that the lack of the arts and creative outlets for children can inhibit personal growth.

Dylan Bollinger knows the importance of art education within schools, and wants to promote this curriculum to the schools throughout Augusta, GA. Why is Arts Education Important? A strong arts education promotes the skills children need to be successful. Exposure to art education promotes self-directed learning, improves school attendance and sharpens critical and creative skills. Recent studies have concluded that the creativity and innovation utilized in the artistic process will be highly valued by employers in the United States in the coming years as we continue to shift into a global economy.

In fact, it's the teachers who are seeing how creative arts programs are strongly influencing their students' self-image, as well as increasing their academic success in the areas of math, science and english. That sad part is during these difficult economic times, arts programs are the first to be cut. In addition, in many schools where classroom space is limited, art "studios" are now only contained in a cart that is wheeled by teachers from room to room, severely limiting the arts education students receive.

It is estimated that by the end of this year, more than 25% of public high schools will have completely stopped their art curriculum. These stats aren’t just bad news for teachers working in the arts, but devastating for the kids that depend on the creative outlet. Numerous studies done over the past decade have demonstrated the amazing benefits of such an integral education facet. Students who don’t have access to art classes not only miss out on a key creative outlet, but also face greater difficulty mastering core subjects, higher dropout rates and more disciplinary problems.

Many community organizations support the arts in local areas, through art exhibits, theatre camps and classes. These people realize the importance of designing and maintaining arts education programs which are culturally enriching, stimulate creative expression, build self-esteem and improve academic achievement.

Dylan Bollinger is set to do his part to keep the theatre and art curriculum in the schools in Augusta. He hopes to soon finish his Master’s degree in theatre education and teach the youth the same important skills he took away from his high school days.
