Dr. Vijay Kumar continues to vie for a seat in the Michigan State House of Representatives. Dr. Kumar wants to represent the 103rd district, an area that encompasses five counties, including Dr. Kumar’s Ogemaw County. Dr. Kumar is a local physical therapist with state-of-the-art facilities throughout West Branch and the surrounding area. He has been involved in protecting the interests of physical therapists and their patients for years with his advocacy work through the American Physical Therapy Association and the Michigan Physical Therapy Association.

When Dr. Vijay Kumar joined the Michigan Physical Therapy Association in 1993, it was starting to gather support for legislation that would allow patients to see the physical therapists they needed without a physician’s referral. This meant that people could get the care they needed faster and easier with a Direct Access law in effect. Dr. Kumar worked hard with physical therapists and their advocates to push legislation that would allow direct access. Many years passed as opposition kept the legislation from moving forward. Finally, in 2014, Dr. Kumar posed for a picture beside Governor Rick Snyder as he signed State Bill 609, the so-called Direct Access bill, into law. The passage brought the state of Michigan up to par with the 49 other states that already had some form of direct access legislation. It was a huge win for physical therapists and their patients throughout the state of Michigan.

Dr. Vijay Kumar first came to West Bank, Michigan with no money and no connections. He worked hard over the years and eventually gained enough training and education to start his own physical therapy clinics and facilities so that he could help people live more fulfilling lives. He wants to continue that work with a seat in the state House of Representatives because he feels he can help people even more from the state level. His experience fighting for legislation that helped many people deal with their physical therapy in a smarter way gave him the idea to run for office on the state level. He continues that dream today. Dr. Kumar hopes that his ideas in the House of Representatives will not only benefit his community in West Branch, they will also help the entire state prosper and create opportunities for all.
