Dr. Thomas Taylor has retired from surgery after an impressive and impactful career in the medical field. With a long list of impressive accomplishments, many would recognize Dr. Taylor as a man who did great things in his life. Part of that could be contributed to the influence that one of the greatest surgeons of all time had on Dr. Taylor, and that is none other than Dr. Michael DeBakey, the famous surgeon that single-handedly developed the practices for open-heart surgery.

In July of 2008, Michael DeBakey passed away after 99 years of life. Considered to be one of the greatest surgeons of all time, Dr. DeBakey had an impact on the medical field and the lives of millions. It is through his work, practices, and procedures that modern medicine is capable of fixing heart-related complications.

While Dr. DeBakey was growing up, there was little to no medical practices that existed in order to treat heart problems or conditions such as a heart attack. DeBakey first developed his interest in surgery working at his father’s pharmacy, and would decide that he wanted to tackle the most difficult proposition being presented to medicine of the time, heart problems. Even while DeBakey was still in school, he invented a roller pump, a vital tool that would take over the functions of the heart and lungs during an open-heart surgery. DeBakey was known for being a passionate risk-taker that worked diligently to solve the most difficult problems of medicine at the time.

Dr. Thomas Taylor was fortunate enough to meet the Dr. DeBakey, and was even a respected colleague, as DeBakey himself invited Dr. Taylor to the Baylor College of Medicine to be a Professor of Surgery. Though Dr. Taylor lived in England at the time, he could hardly turn down a personal invite from one of the greatest surgeons of all time.

Dr. Thomas Taylor and many other talented doctors respect the contributions of Dr. DeBakey to the medical field. DeBakey has become a kind of symbol for surgeons everywhere, a prime example of what it means to be dedicated, passionate, and successful in the medical field.
