Dr. Edward Filcheck informs women about the possible damage high heels can cause.

Dr. Edward Filcheck is a licensed and board certified podiatrist who has owned his own practice since 1998. He sees patients for a variety of issues and aliments. Some problems can be caused by genetics, others by accidents. Some are environmental and can be controlled or changed based on the patient’s behaviors and lifestyle. One of the problems Dr. Edward Filcheck may see is women who have developed foot problems because of their daily use of high heeled shoes. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association ultra-high heels cane lead to a range of problems from ankle sprains to chronic pain.

Even if you are only wearing mid-high heels, they are known to cause a painful knot on the back of the heel. This has been called “pump bump” because of the boney deformity that often forms on the heel from the rigid material. This deformity is often permanent. The pressure can also cause swelling, blisters, bursitis and pain in the Achilles tendon.

Women that like their heels super high are at a higher risk for hairline fractures to various bones in the foot, especially around the ball of the foot. Continual pressure to the metatarsal bones in this area can cause inflammation to the nerves and bone and even hairline fractures.

By lowering your heel height to no more than 2 inches, you will put less stress on the bones and tendons found in and near your foot. Although wearing shorter heels will be less likely to cause issues, they should still be worn in moderation.

Many women have worn stilettos and had issues not wobbling while walking. Because all of your weight is pinpointed on the thin heel you are more likely to wobble, trip and sprain your ankle. The most common type of sprain from heels is a lateral sprain, which occurs when you roll on the outside of your foot which stretches the ligaments in your ankle past their normal length.

Wearing high heels with a chunkier heel can distribute the weight more evenly and can help to prevent the wobble that often leads to ankle sprains.

Dr. Edward Filcheck often sees patients with a variety of foot issues and always does his best to get to the root cause.
