Local celebrity known for her dog whispering talents Betty S. Egger announced she will retire and close her business this year.

Betty S. Egger has owned her own business in her home town of Mercer Island, Washington for twenty years. She has trained or boarded many of the town’s dogs over her long and distinguished career. Egger had vaulted herself to local legend status over the years because of her outspoken stance on the treatment of dogs and the importance of training, and her excellent training services. She announced this weekend that she will be retiring from her dog training career and closing her business.

The news that Betty S. Egger will retire has already saddened many residents of Mercer Island, many of whom turned up at her house soon after they heard the announcement to convince her stay in business. She says that the business was a “wonderful dream,” but she wanted to rest and take care of her family and her five dogs she still owns. Egger also emphasized that she will not retire from public life, and will continue her volunteering with some of the no-kill shelters in the area. She works to raise money for their cause and to raise awareness of shelter animals throughout the region.

Betty S. Egger also told her many fans that she will still consult with some dog owners to help train their dogs. While Egger won’t be able to help as many people with their training their dogs, she has trained many people throughout the community who can train dogs “just as well” as she can. Egger says that training people to train dogs was crucial to her cause because “more people can train more dogs here.” She hopes to continue to stay active in the dog owners community on Mercer Island, and in the greater Seattle area.

Betty S. Egger opened her kennel and dog training business in the early nineties because she felt there was a large need in her community on Mercer Island for dog services. Too many dog owners, she felt, were going underserved and sending too many dogs back to the pound. Egger knows that with the right training, any dog can find a good home and a love-filled life. Egger began operating a kennel out of her garage. As word of her excellent care and occasional training she found herself performing on the dogs, her business grew into a full-service dog daycare, boarding, and training center, the first of its kind on the island.
