Looking back these 28 years, much has changed in the crab fishing industry in Alaska. Crab fishing in Alaska started in the early 1900s and continued very much in the same way until the late 1980s, when a decline in the quantity of red king crab started showing. Crab fishing in the Alaskan waters was carried out in “Derby Style” where hundreds of boats would set out during a particular time of the year to catch as much crab as possible. There was only a small fishing window when boats could go crab fishing, and the fishing boats went out in great numbers to catch crabs and try to make as much money as possible. In the 1980s, there was a huge decline in the number of red king crab, the most expensive crab meat available which prompted Alaskan authorities to implement strict regulations on the size and quantity of crab that could be caught each year.

Alaskan crab fishing is a dangerous job, one that has seen several crab fishermen lose their lives. Dawayne D Butler knows the risks involved in the job but ensures that he follows all security measures when out crab fishing. With all the restrictions in place, he remains positive that the industry will continue to remain a lucrative business for many years to come.
