David Sockol is a prominent Florida attorney with tips for succeeding in law school

David Sockol has been practicing the law in Florida since 1989, the year that he graduated from law school and was admitted to the Florida bar. He is the founder of David Sockol and Associates in St. Petersburg, and is the firm's Senior attorney.

He studied law at the Stetson University College of Law. Like many law students he found it both rigorous and exhilarating. Law students are advised to do all of the reading for their assigned courses and to never fall behind in their studies.

Law school must be treated as a full-time job, which it is, and it requires a total commitment of the student's time and energy.

As he knows, most law students find it invaluable to take notes as they read. They should write down the legally significant facts of each assigned case as they go through it, taking careful note of the legal rationale for the decision. Then, before each class, students should carefully review their notes so that the material is fresh in their minds.

In law school, professors typically cover material in class that was not part of the assigned reading, so keeping up class attendance is important. Equally important is paying close attention to the ongoing discussion and participating in it.

One of the most valuable learning tools for any law student is the study group. This is a way for students to thrash out the material they are reading about and learning in class, with their fellow classmates, and it can reinforce the material and deepen their understanding. It's always best to gravitate toward those students who are well prepared and have similar academic goals. It's a serious business, and should be treated accordingly. Students who feel they are not benefitting as much as they could from their study groups should probably drop out of that group and find another one that is a better fit.

Just as was in undergraduate work, there are exams at the end of each semester, and law professors often hold review sessions in the period leading up to the exam. This is a time to clarify any areas or issues that have been confusing and pick up some tips about how to best write exam answers. It is common for law students to have questions about their classes at some point, especially during the first year. They are reminded that every professor has regular office hours, and they should be taken advantage of.
