Craig Raucher and the Staten Island Basketball League Celebrate their 35th Anniversary

Local Staten Island Pick-up Basketball League has been going strong since 1980.

Craig Raucher's Staten Island Basketball League just celebrated a major milestone: the record for the longest running basketball league in a single location. In the state of New York, there is no other current or former league in existence that has remained active weekly in the same place that it originally started.

The Staten Island Basketball League plays twice a week, every week. Pick-up games are always scheduled for Wednesdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 8am. Each session lasts for three hours. During that time, a single player can regularly participate in as many as eight games. It is a fast paced, adrenaline filled experience that over 250 people have participated over the 35 years.

Craig Raucher originally started the league in the city of Brooklyn, called the Brooklyn Athletic League, after graduating from Brooklyn College. Upon graduation, as he moved out of the Brooklyn borough and into Staten Island for his upcoming career, Raucher took the league with him and renamed it the Staten Island Basketball League.

While everyone in the area calls the social organization a league, Raucher has stated that it is actually “a large group of men coming together Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings like religious zealots seeking the high of a basketball win in controlled pick-up games.” Whatever you choose to call it, the Staten Island Basketball League is loved by many.

The league welcomes all players, of any age or talent level. Currently, there are players in the league ranging in age from 25 to 65 years young. Many of the players are more mature, favoring the classic style of the PS 8's wooden court to that of an outdoor asphalt setup. The public school that hosts the league is one of the oldest in the region, and was originally constructed in 1915. The atmosphere is ideal for this type of league, from the wood paneling to the Hoosiers style décor.

Another benefit of the league’s chosen location is the indoor venue. This allows the Staten Island Basketball League's serious players to practice their free throws and hone their three-point skills year round, regardless of how much snow is falling outside.
