Charles Turner regularly takes a break from his busy schedule as a San Francisco Realtor to volunteer

Charles Turner has been a realtor in San Francisco for 33 years. During that time, he’s also volunteered at St. Anthony’s downtown. St. Anthony’s has been serving hot meals to those that need them for over a hundred years in its famous dining hall. Here, those struggling on the streets can find compassion, companionship, and the tools they need to start getting their lives back on track.

Charles Turner is happy to help people get a proper meal. In San Francisco, it is estimated that one in five adults lack the resources to provide food for themselves or their families. St. Anthony’s tries to offset this lack of resources by producing almost a million nutritious meals a year, making it one of the largest community meal programs in the Bay Area. These meals feed the people who have fallen through the safety net: the mentally ill, veterans, seniors, the working poor, the homeless, and more. Many of these individuals rely on the St. Anthony’s Dining Room to sustain themselves and their families. St. Anthony’s is committed to welcoming each guest at their dining room with dignity and respect.

Charles Turner busses tables and serves food in St. Anthony’s Dining Room in San Francisco regularly, as he has been for decades. The organization has been providing food and services to people in downtown San Francisco for over sixty years. In 2015, the Dining Room served over 2 million pounds of food, 75% of which was donated or provided for free by community partners. A recent environmental program allowed St. Antony’s to compost or recycle 70% of program waste. Because the Dining Room has been in downtown San Francisco for decades, it has become an integral part of the lives of those who go there to eat and socialize with others struggling in many of the same ways. Since about 83% of St. Anthony’s guests live alone, the Dining Room is a place where they can share stories and resources, and connect with others in the community.

Charles Turner was taught to volunteer and help his community by his father, the former public relations director for Willie Brown, a veteran Bay Area and state politician and former mayor of San Francisco. Turner learned at an early age the value of volunteering for organizations like St. Anthony’s that devote their efforts to helping the less fortunate and the needy.
