Former Naples Daily News Crime Reporter Brigid O'Malley of Naples won the prestigious Al Nakkula Award in 2001

 
Brigid O’Malley of Naples is honored to have worked in the profession of print journalism for nearly 20 years, and to have spent 16 of those as a Crime Reporter for the Naples Daily News. A hard-hitting, award-winning journalist who consistently displayed an unwavering passion for and dedication to the craft, O’Malley received numerous awards for her tenacious approach to police and crime reporting, as well as her considerable talent for providing an accurate, detailed and engaging story to the reading public.

Amongst the many awards and honors given to Brigid O’Malley throughout the course of her Naples News career is the coveted Al Nakkula Award, which she received for outstanding accomplishment in police reporting in 2001. The award is presented to an outstanding reporter each and every year by the University of Colorado College of Media, Communication and Information.
As Brigid O’Malley of Naples knows, the Al Nakkula award is named after the late Al Nakkula, a four decade veteran of the Rocky Mountain News who approached each story and lead with a legendary bulldog tenacity. She is proud to have been the recipient of such an esteemed professional honor, one whose namesake fought tirelessly and passionately to uncover and report the truth each and every day.

O’Malley amassed an impressive collection of journalism awards throughout her Naples Daily News career, including countless First Place in Crime Reporting Honors between 1987 and 2005. She also accumulated numerous Scripps Reporting Awards during her career, and was the winner of the 2001 Frances De Vore Award for Public Service, an annual award given by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors.

Since leaving the Naples Daily News in 2006, Brigid O’Malley has worked as an Assistant Manager for Recruiting for the Us Census, as a self-employed writer/editor, as Director of Communications for Ave Maria University and, most recently, as a Staff Writer and Media Relations Coordinator for the Habitat for Humanity of Collier County.
O’Malley has lived and worked in the Naples area since 1990, and continues to serve organizations as one of the area’s best communications professionals. She is also an aspiring crime fiction novelist.
