Teresa Susmaras Does Doctoral Research Utilizing Brain Imaging for Aggressive and Impulsive Behavior at Suffolk University.

Clinical neuropsychologist Teresa Susmaras attended Suffolk University Boston for doctoral work involving regions of the brain associated with antisocial personality disorder and aggressive-impulsive behavior.

Suffolk University was founded in 1906 as a law school, named after its location in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Suffolk University is a coeducational, private educational institution comprised of the Suffolk University Law School, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Sawyer Business School. Lawyer Gleason Archer, Sr. had wished to create a law study institution for those who needed to work as they studied, and originally the students of ‘Archer’s Evening Law School’ had met in Archer’s home in Roxbury. Conceived at the outset as an ‘evening only’ school, Suffolk University today employs over 800 faculty members for a student enrollment of 8,891 undergraduate and graduate students. 17 academic departments offer at least seventy academic programs. Suffolk University was ranked 7th by U.S. News in ‘Best College: Most International Students’ attending Master’s programs.

Teresa Susmaras’ doctoral work at Suffolk University focused on a neuropsychology concentration, a field of study which utilized the Brain Image Analysis Laboratory for research. As part of her work in the Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology, Teresa centered her doctoral dissertation study into identifying the brain regions which originate antisocial aggressive and impulsive behaviors. As a research assistant, Teresa Susmaras analyzed structural and anatomical neuroimaging data, eventually determining her pivotal interest in the source of antisocial behaviors. The Brain Image Analysis Laboratory has studied the association of the orbital frontal cortex to aggression and impulsivity on an ongoing basis, as well as watching the associated research work of faculty and student researchers into the source and threshold of divergent thinking (creativity) in white matter of the corpus callosum.

Teresa Susmara’s decision to do her Ph.D. research and doctoral dissertation at Suffolk University stems from the protocols of its doctoral program, which strove to integrate research and teaching. Established in accordance with a scientist-practitioner model first set forth at a national conference in 1949, the Boulder Model, the philosophy of Suffolk University’s clinical psychology doctoral program is that it be grounded in solid scientific principles guided by the character of the psychology discipline.
