Barry Littlejohn, an Arizona doctor, has tips for avoiding the worst of menopause

Barry Littlejohn is a doctor in private practice in Glendale, Arizona. He opened his office there in 2008 after relocating from his office from Peru, Illinois, where he had been in practice for sixteen years.

Barry Littlejohn specializes in women’s health. He treats everything from high-risk pregnancies to ovarian cysts, and women of all ages. He urges all of his patients to stay in good physical condition, and reminds them that staying healthy when they are young can go a long way toward alleviating many of the worst symptoms of menopause.
One of the most important things women can do is to keep down their stress level. He says that is often easier said than done in our modern stressful world, but there are still simple, everyday things that he recommends. Take a class in yoga or meditation, for example, or create a playlist with soothing, peaceful music on an iPod.

It’s also a good idea to manage your weight. Barry Littlejohn says that carrying too much weight can make the symptoms of menopause worse. And because your metabolism gets slower with age, he recommends finding an activity you enjoy, such as hiking or riding a bike, and adopt a healthy diet, to help you keep fit.

Barry Littlejohn tells his patients who smoke to quit. It’s always a bad idea to smoke anyway, but women who smoke can raise their risk of early menopause by as much as sixty percent, according to one study. Quitting smoking at an early age goes a long way toward avoiding early menopause.

Strength training is another good idea, says Barry Littlejohn. Muscle mass burns calories quickly, but it decreases with age, especially if you tend to be idle. So some kind of strength training a couple of times a week is a great idea. It doesn’t have to be anything too intense, he says; small hand weights should do the trick. As a bonus, it can increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis.

Finally, Barry Littlejohn says that there are some dietary steps to take that can help women avoid the worst of menopause. The phytochemicals in green vegetables like broccoli and kale help your body keep hormone levels in balance. B vitamins can boost mood-regulating chemicals like serotonin. So he urges his patients to always eat right.
