Arthur Kanev has been privileged to work with the Agape Cafe during the course of his mission work, allowing him to make a direct impact on the lives of homeless people.

Since retiring from his career as a dentist, Arthur Kanev has dedicated his life to missionary work and often donates his time and skills to good causes in the state of Florida in an effort to improve the local community and ensure that the people who need the most help are able to get it.

It is this dedication to helping others that allowed him to discover the Agape Cafe, which is one of the missions of the St. Martin’s Episcopal Church based in Pompano Beach. The mission aims to provide aid to as many homeless people as possible during its events, offering free meals, clothing, caring, love, and cosmetics to those who have nowhere else to turn. Upon hearing about the mission, Arthur Kanev was keen to get involved and for the last four years he has taken part in their bi-monthly events, serving as a cook, donor and server.

The volunteers at the events encompass a spread of people from St. Martins Church, The Sanctuary Church and a range of other Christian missions, all of whom pull together to ensure that homeless people have the opportunity to enjoy a fresh, healthy and nutritious meal while also acquiring the essentials that they need for life. The volunteers are amongst the most dedicated and faithful in the area and they commit themselves fully to giving as much of themselves as possible to those who are less fortunate.

The mission is often visited by as many as 100 people per event, though they find that this number increases to upwards of 200 during important holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving. This offers the volunteers the chance to get to know the people in their local community and discuss their struggles with and share their love with, which in turn ensures that they have a better understanding of the social issues that affect the lives of the less fortunate and can thus begin to work on affecting change in the community.

Arthur Kanev plans to continue volunteering to the mission for as long as he is able to withstand working for 4-5 hours in front of hot stoves and ovens and he is thankful for the opportunity to do so at every Agape Cafe event.
