Anthony Harrelson of Virginia says volunteers make a difference

Anthony Harrelson of Virginia is the Chief Executive Officer at White Oak Industries, a leading biopharmaceutical company that is is beginning to make a name for itself in the field of immunotherapy. He says that there is a need to provide an active immunotherapy that can overcome viral resistance, and train the human immune system to respond to infected cells, wherever they might be in the body.

Away from the research lab, Anthony Harrelson of Virginia is committed to making his community a better place by volunteering his time to various worthy causes and nonprofits. He is a believer in what former President George Bush referred to as "a thousand points of light." As he knows, about one of every three American adults volunteers time in one form or another. Volunteers come in many forms and in many pursuits: everything from volunteer crossing guards to volunteer firefighters.

As a scientist, Anthony Harrelson of Virginia understands that volunteers not only help their communities; volunteering has been shown to have a positive impact on the volunteer. It can boost self-esteem, and have a positive effect on health through reduced heart rates and reduced blood pressure. And according to a report by the Corporation for National and Community Service, volunteers in general have greater life satisfaction and lower rates of depression, and even a longer than average life expectancy.

He appreciates the observation attributed to the scientist and humanitarian Albert Einstein. "Not everything that counts can be counted," Einstein said, "and not everything that can be counted, counts." This can be applied to volunteering, and is something that Anthony Harrelson of Virginia takes to heart. Volunteers come from all walks of life: rich and poor, young and old, ordinary and exceptional. There are many ways that people can get involved in their communities by volunteering. They can teach, tutor, mentor, coach, and provide support to students with everything from math homework to dealing with personal crises. They walk dogs and help veterinary experts organize animal shelters. They take tickets at performing arts events, and lead tours at museums. All of it has value, and a lot of it can be measured. According to the CNCS, more than sixty million people in the United States gave eight billion hours of their time to volunteering in a just one years' time.
