Alissa Breindel of Austin describes how to effectively learn new material.

“To learn and not to do is to really not to learn.
To know and not to do is to really not to know.”

-The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

In school we are taught a number of strategies and concepts, but whether we have actually learned and are able to apply them is another matter. The quote above points out a common misconception: if we do not practice something, we do not actually learn or know it.

Hearing knowledge or seeing a strategy does not make it known or learned. We’ve all heard the maxim, “practice makes perfect”, but we’d argue that a more accurate truth is: “the more you practice the better you become.” You can’t just practice something once… repetition is key. Covering up the answer options will only become automatic if you force yourself to use this strategy every time you practice.

The same goes for specific knowledge and concepts: the constant application of vocabulary is what allows this information to become permanent. This is why it is vital to write out the definition of the term curmudgeon, instead of just reading it over: it allows students to ingrain information, rather than just reviewing it (was it ever learned in the first place?).

There is a difference between going through the motions and consciously giving 100% during practice. In order to ensure improvement and success, a SAT student must practice each taught strategy and knowledge every time at above 100% in order to actually learn and know it for the test day.
