Throughout all of his life, Alex Funicello has displayed a passion for helping others. In his profession as a pulmonologist, he has been successful in helping prolong the lives of his patients and protect them from ailments of the heart and lungs. In his personal life, he likes to golf; and it wasn’t long before he found a way to help others through that activity as well.

As members of their local country club, Alex Funicello and his wife participate in an annual charity tournament every year, where couples from the area register to play; and if they win, a charity of their choosing receives a monetary grand prize. Funicello and his wife have always been passionate about animal welfare, so they decided to choose a local rescue shelter and pet adoption agency as their charitable cause.

The tournament took place back in September of this year; and 24 couples had registered in total. The event took two days, the first being preliminary rounds where the lowest twelve scorers were disqualified. Alex and his wife were off to a slow start that day; and squeezed their way into the second day with an 11th place finish. The next day, however, they were on fire. The scoring was done by best ball per couple; and Alex’s start with a birdie on the first hole put the pair at a strong start that continued throughout the game. Of all their competitors, only one couple, Neil and Jennifer Tyson, had seemed to keep up. Being only two strokes behind, the couple brought their competition to the greens of the 18th hole. It was there that the couple’s putting game had faltered, while the Funicellos remained consistent and ended up taking that two-stroke lead with them to the finish.

Aside from winning the tournament, Alex Funicello and his wife have an extra reason to celebrate: their efforts are going to be pivotal in helping abused and neglected animals find a new home in Fresno.
