Jaheyla Jones is an actress, producer, and now an award winning creative. Her journey in the film industry, like many others, is one of perseverance, rejection, and frustration. However, Jones’ made it her goal to make it in this industry as a black woman. While not welcomed in many spaces in Hollywood, she decided instead to create a space where she and other creatives like her could find community. Thus, Blaqq Productions was born. Here she created, produced, and starred in her first ever sketch.
The Millenial Sketch Show is a project Jones’ dreamt up a while ago. This series is one that highlights problems within society while being both witty and funny. It was important for Jone’s to have fun and create a great experience for everyone participating in the project.
The Houston Comedy Film Festival is part of a larger film circuit that has been supporting up and coming filmmakers, actors, and writers for more than a decade. The Houston Comedy Festival has been operating since 2008. Since then the festival has invited filmmakers from London, Germany as well as from across the US. So when Jones’ was invited she was ecstatic to join the rest of the creatives.
Due to COVID both finishing the sketch show and hosting the festival was put on pause. However, the Houston festival hosted a drive in screening and recently announced the winners. Jones’ The Millennial Sketch show was one of the winners.
“Even though production has been paused, I feel so inspired to write and create after this win. This was my first ever production and it feels so amazing to be able to win and gain recognition for myself and my crew.”, Jaheyla explains.
Production for the sketch show will continue within COVID guidelines later this year.
