WIGHTMAN STEWART WATERJET/WS URSVIKEN working with Ursviken has upgraded an original 1981 Ursviken EKP-H640 tonne press brake at Cleveland Bridge, the Darlington based global leader in technology based engineering, construction and steel fabrication services.

The Ursviken press brake was originally supplied to the company's specification and since there was no direct replacement, any failure could potentially seriously affect production. WIGHTMAN STEWART was approached to find a way of ensuring the machine's continued performance whilst also upgrading it to suit current production requirements.

The press brake had given Cleveland Bridge outstanding service and been a key part of the company's fabrication services and the processing of up to 1000 tonnes of steel per week used in the manufacture of large bridge sections. When originally supplied the machine had an 11.6 metre machining width it was also prepared for the addition of widening brackets. These were later found to be required and the machine width was widened so that it could bend sections up to 18 metres long, making it one of if not the largest press brake in the country. The extension was been achieved through the addition of special extension pieces on the top ‘blade’ and the bottom so that the press brake now meets all the companies fabrication requirements.

The upgrade included a new control system (Cybelec 884PS), a complete hydraulic system rebuild replacing: Main Hydraulic Block, Filter assemblies, Filler, Holding and Servo Valves all couplings and pipe work as well as the replacement of wiring and many electrical components in the main electrical cabinet. It was not simply a case of fitting a new controller as the press brake's hydraulic system etc also had to be upgraded to ensure compatibility with the new control system and electrics.

WIGHTMAN STEWART completed the upgrade in around just two weeks. The work was carried out on-site including commissioning and operator training for the new controller.

Cleveland Bridge has over the years manufactured many bridges, including the famous Tyne Bridge the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well as the original Severn Bridge and the Middleborough Transporter Bridge. With the successful upgrade of the Ursviken press brake by WIGHTMAN STEWART, the company is set to continue its history of success. Confident that the machine is once more reliable and should the unforeseen happen parts are readily available for many years to come.

WIGHTMAN STEWART and supports the complete Ursviken range of high efficiency press brakes and guillotines for any application. WIGHTMAN STEWART has records for all Ursviken machines installed in UK and can provide support, trouble shooting spare parts and tooling and the vital 24 hour response times. The company can also offer new machines both as customised solutions or standard machines as well as upgrades that increase productivity and product quality.
