New York, NY - Many people keep an eye turned towards the film industry. If it isn't a career they want to jump into, they are at least watching to see what new movies are coming out within their favorite genres. However, some people actually want to engage in the world of film, and some have been doing so for decades. Sofia Sondervan is one such person who decided to work in the film industry.

Originally, Sofia Sondervan came from The Netherlands, but she decided to study film in New York. "It was an amazing experience to attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, from where I graduated cum laude with a BFA in Film and Television," says Sofia Sondervan. As a former student of the film industry, she understands that there are skills developed in school that you just won't find jumping into the field from the outside.

"Many kids dream of becoming an actor, but some people are better cut out for doing the behind-the-scene stuff even if it is hard work," says Sofia Sondervan. She knows this firsthand because, in many ways, the position of a film producer is more of an overall manager. Producers carry a lot of weight and responsibility on their shoulders, including time and money management and problem solving. "It is not something you want to do unless you have a passion for doing it. There are moments where the job can be very stressful," says Sofia Sondervan.

Knowing the work that goes into the job, Sofia Sondervan took it upon herself to share her experience with others. "I teach a class for graduate students pursuing directing and producing," Sofia Sondervan explains, "and I encourage them to practice their skills as often as possible. There is a number of projects students work on, and there are many local and international film festivals that students can submit their work to for experience and name recognition."

If it is one thing Sofia Sondervan appreciates about her career in film education, it is guiding aspiring film students towards the pursuit of their goals in the industry. She appreciates educating those who also have a passion for film.
