Former Cleveland Indians outfielder and book publisher Don Hubbard is asking for the community’s assistance in his effort to raise awareness about Down syndrome through the power of storytelling.

Hubbard seeks to raise funds for a new book series titled T-21: A New Beginning, which focuses on the adventures of a boy with Down syndrome named Timmy and his cat, Percy. At night, Timmy assumes the identity of T-21 and discovers he has superpowers which he uses to help others like him. The books will highlight various aspects of what it is like to live with Down syndrome as T-21 and Percy face down bullies and other challenges with special hugs and the power of love.

The goal of the campaign is to raise $10,000 by March 15 in order to print a first run of 2,500 copies. Hubbard says his motivation for crowdfunding the book series is largely due to the slow nature of traditional publishing companies. Those who contribute to the campaign are entitled to certain bonuses based on the level of giving, including the opportunity for children to be written into the stories.

“As someone who has spent many years in the publishing world, I know how slow it can take to launch a title,” Hubbard says. “The message we’re trying to convey is too important to wait, so we are asking for the community’s support.” Hubbard was inspired to create T-21 by his granddaughter Lily (who also has Down syndrome).”

The books are written for audiences aged 3-9 years old and are fully illustrated by artist Alfonso Rosso. Hubbard says the books are ideal learning tools to prevent children from forming negative stereotypes about those with Down syndrome at an early age. He also says the books make perfect additions to classroom curriculum or children’s libraries.
