Researchers have found that by adding a secondary and highly common prostate cancer treatment to the mix, they can successfully extend the lives of men suffering from higher risk prostate cancer.

Irving, TX, Men who are diagnosed with higher risk cases of prostate cancer may find their treatment options more limited than others. This is especially so if cancer has spread and surgical and other interventions are likely to prove ineffective. New research, however, casts light on the possible benefits of employing a combination treatment to help extend life.

“Androgen deprivation therapy has long been used to help slow the growth of more aggressive cancers,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “This treatment is often very successful in extending life, but it is not considered a cure. It is also known to have a limited duration of effectiveness.”

Researchers have found that by adding a secondary and highly common prostate cancer treatment to the mix, they can successfully extend the lives of men suffering from higher risk prostate cancer. The study in question involved the use of brachytherapy in conjunction with hormone therapy. Brachytherapy calls for the implantation of tiny radioactive pellets directly into a tumor to battle cancer cells at their source. Often used for its curative properties in lower risk cases, this form of radiation, the research shows, can also help men with higher risk cancer.

The study involved more than 20,000 prostate cancer patients who received androgen deprivation therapy with a traditional radiation boost. Another 4,500 men received hormone therapy with low-dose seed implants. The five-year survival rate was higher in the brachytherapy group at 89 percent versus 83 percent.

“The study adds to the ever-growing body of evidence that shows highly targeted brachytherapy can offer men with higher risk cases of prostate cancer a viable way to improve outcomes and enhance longevity,” says Dr. Echt.

Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are urged to talk to their doctors about all treatment options. The best recommendations will be specific to a man’s unique case.
