The risk of getting prostate cancer increases as one gets older.

Irving, Texas – August 23, 2019 - The risk of getting prostate cancer increases as one gets older. Approximately, 60% of prostate cancers across the U.S. are diagnosed in individuals aged 65 and above. It is uncommon for men to have this cancer before attaining the age of 40.

“We don’t have absolute prevention of prostate cancer,” argues Dr. Echt. “But, we often recommend that those with an average risk of this cancer type make choices that would benefit their overall health. Specifically, eat right and maintain a healthy diet.”

To reduce the risk of prostate cancer,

• Choose a healthy diet: Evidence has shown that choosing a diet that’s full of vegetable and fruits and low in fat may lower the risk of prostate cancer. Thus, to reduce your prostate cancer risk, limit fatty foods or go for low-fat options. For example, don’t use a lot of fat when cooking foods, choose leaner meat, and dairy products with reduced fat.

• Have a healthy weight: Obese men – those with a BMI of 30 and above – are at a higher risk of prostate cancer. If you are in this category, embark on weight loss. To achieve this, reduce your calory intake and engage in physical activity. To lower the calories, eat vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

• Exercise often: According to studies, men who exercise are at a lower risk of getting prostate cancer. Physical activity has tons of other health benefits, such as reducing the risk of other cancers and heart diseases, losing or maintaining weight.

“Those at a higher risk of getting this cancer need more than lifestyle changes to prevent it,” says Dr. Echt. “If you are above 50 years, prostate cancer cases in your family history, or are at least 40 years and African-American, you should consider yearly screening procedures with your doctor.”
