The Treatment Options for Advanced Prostate Cancer

Dr. Gregory Echt explains the various treatment options available for prostate cancer.

Irving, Texas, April 24, 2019 – Advanced prostate cancer is cancer that has already spread beyond the prostate. The common sites where prostate cancer spreads to are mostly the bones and the lymph nodes. Advanced metastatic prostate cancer has currently no treatments. But there are effective ways that can help in controlling its symptoms, slowing its spread and prolonging the life of the patient.

“Once your prostate cancer has been diagnosed as advanced, you will need to discuss your possible treatment plans,” explained Dr. Echt. “It is highly likely that you will have several health professionals coming together in a multidisciplinary team to attend to your specific case.”

Here are some of the available treatments for advanced prostate cancer:

• Hormone therapy – Since testosterone is the primary hormone fueling prostate cancer, doctors work on reducing its concentration in the body to slow the growth and spread of prostate cancer. This androgen deprivation therapy is the primary approach in treating advanced prostate cancer. Therefore the testicles which are responsible for producing testosterone are surgically removed to help treat the disease. But most men prefer drug therapy than the irreversible surgical removal of the testicles.

• Chemotherapy – Patients who do not respond to hormone therapy can undergo chemotherapy as a standard regimen for patients with advanced prostate cancer.

• Immunotherapy – Immunotherapy uses the patient’s immune system to attack cancer cells, Sipuleucel-T (Provenge) is the cancer vaccine that can treat advanced prostate cancer. It is made from a patient’s white blood cells which are engineered in the lab to fight the prostate cancer and then injected back into the patient by IV injection.

• Clinical trials – Clinical trials have proven to be effective in treating advanced prostate cancer. Currently approved drugs in clinical trials for advanced prostate cancer include Zytiga, Xtandi, and Provenge.

“Researchers are still pursuing several new ways to treat prostate cancer that has advanced,” concluded Dr. Echt.
