Dr. Echt explains the various screening methods used in prostate cancer patients.

Irving, Texas – May 17, 2019 – Prostate cancer is common in men, and there are many management and treatment options even when the disease is diagnosed at a later stage. Screening for prostate cancer aims to detect cancer early when it is treatable. It increases the chances of treating the disease successfully to improve a patient’s quality of life. Recommendations for prostate cancer screening is at the age of 50 or below for those who are at high risk of the disease.

“There are several options for prostate cancer screening,” said Dr. Echt. "Patients should discuss their particular situation, the risks, and benefits of screening with their doctors to decide the best screening methods that suit them."

Here are the various screening methods for prostate cancer:

• PSA Test – PSA test is the current standard of screening for prostate cancer. Doctors consider factors such as family history, age, and race before recommending a screening method. PSA test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood of a patient. High PSA levels are an indication of the presence of prostate cancer.

• The prostate health index (PHI) test – This is a new test that is recommended by doctors if the patient has an abnormal PSA score. The PHI test gives better results of a patient’s prostate cancer risk. It is a blood test that is more accurate and will measure a patient’s risk to determine whether it warrants a biopsy. It also accurately detects whether the cancer is aggressive or not.

• The prostate cancer urine test – This test helps to detect the PCA3 gene in the urine and also allows doctors to assess a patient's prostate cancer risk. PCA3 is a noncoding RNA in the prostate, and if overexpressed, the chances are that the patient has prostate cancer.

• Prostate biopsy – Prostate biopsies are used to confirm a prostate cancer diagnosis definitively. MRI imaging technology fused with ultrasound can be performed to guide the biopsy.

“Once a biopsy has confirmed that a patient has cancer, the next step taken by doctors is to determine the stage (level of aggressiveness) of the cancer cells using the Gleason score,” continued Dr. Echt. “A pathologist will examine tissue samples to identify how aggressive the cancer cells are.”
