Prostate Cancer: The Real Facts

Dr. Echt gives insight on the facts about prostate cancer.

Irving, Texas – Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in men. However, it is also a slow growing disease with only 8% of cases reporting symptoms. It means that many men who have received prostate cancer diagnosis have survived the disease, thus reducing prostate cancer-related deaths over the last fifteen years in the United States.

“The American Cancer Society has revealed that one in every six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, with approximately 233,000 men being diagnosed in 2014,” says Dr. Echt. “But even though statistics show that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the U.S., the disease is manageable and often curable. Today, more than 99% of men with prostate cancer live for more than five years after diagnosis.”

Here are facts about prostate cancer:

• Diagnoses show that prostate cancer is more prevalent in older men, mostly after the age of 65. At the age of 50, one-third of men in the U.S. have microscopic evidence of prostate cancer. At the age of 75, many men experience prostate changes that are caused by cancer. It is because prostate cancer is slow growing in nature that most men never experience the symptoms or any danger to their health.

• Prostate cancer begins in the cells, which are building blocks that makeup tissue. A tissue is a layer of cells that perform a specific function when working together. When the body needs a new tissue, cells grow naturally and divide in response. Cells grow old and die, and then new cells take their place. This process goes wrong when the body fails to get rid of unneeded or abnormal cells – a process called apoptosis which may get blocked in cancer cells. When old cells do not die in the body, they form a tissue mass – a tumor, which can be benign or malignant.

• Prostate cancer is ranked as the second most common cancer diagnosis for men in America. The disease grows very slowly. Most men with low-grade prostate cancer which is confined to the gland live longer after diagnosis. Even with no treatment they will not die but will live with prostate cancer until they die with some other unrelated cause.

“If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, discuss your treatment options with a radiation oncologist, a urologist, and a medical oncologist," says Dr. Echt.
