Dr. Echt explains how the prostate cancer risk group is determined

Irving, Texas – When a patient is diagnosed with prostate cancer, the doctors will require more information to determine how to proceed with the treatment recommendations. Assigning the type of cancer to a prostate cancer risk group helps doctors to classify the cancer and its progressions. Risk groups help to identify the current state of the cancer at the cell level, its aggressiveness and progression within the prostate, outside the prostate or to other organs or other parts of the body. They help doctors to plan the type of treatment or combination of treatments best suited for each patient’s case.

“Prostate cancer risk groups make treatment options clearer for the patient,” explained Dr. Echt. “Once the risk group is understood by both the doctors and the patient, treatment decisions will be made to help increase the odds for successful outcomes.”

Here are the three determining factors for a patient’s prostate cancer risk group

• The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test results – PSA results are derived from a blood test to offer information on the health of the prostate. When prostate cancer is present, the prostate cells produce more of the antigen which can be tested in blood samples and is usually the first sign of prostate cancer. A PSA test can also help to screen for prostate cancer and is among the first measures taken by doctors when prostate cancer is suspected.

• The prostate cancer stage – The stage of prostate cancer is determined by analysis of one or several tests. Your stage describes the progression of the disease within the prostate gland and beyond. Early stage prostate cancer is usually confined or localized to the prostate gland. As the cancer grows and spreads, it may begin to penetrate the prostate capsule to the nearby organs and then to distant body parts and will be graded as an advanced stage of prostate cancer.

• The Gleason Score – The Gleason score is obtained by taking multiple samples during a biopsy of the prostate tissues. The number of biopsy samples taken is usually around 10 to 12. The samples are analysed under a microscope a pathologist to examine the nature of the cells found within the samples. The Gleason system is used to grade and determine the Gleason score, which in turn assists in determining a patient’s risk group. The higher the Gleason score, the greater the risk your prostate cancer is likely to pose.

“Doctors have to understand the risks that a tumor may pose before making appropriate recommendations after diagnosis of prostate cancer,” continued Dr. Echt. “This can be achieved through tests that will assign a patient to a specific prostate cancer risk group.”
