There are wedding cars and then there are Rolls Royce wedding cars and for some clients of the leading team at Premier Carriage, there is no other wedding car option than a Rolls Royce. What makes the Rolls Royce such an iconic car for so many couples tying the knot? The team at Premier Carriage takes care of a fleet of more than 750 wedding car options and has been in the field industry since 1996 and therefore they could share some of the lesser-known facts about this make that contributes to it being such a much-loved choice.

“Just like any other legend, the Rolls Royce also comes with several stories and these are the stories that we pass on as our founder, Michael Keene founded the company partly due to his love for Rolls Royce. For example, many know that The Spirit of Ecstasy refers to the ornament adorning the hood but a few people know that it got that name in 1911. It was when Baron John Edward Scott-Montagu highlighted the similarities between the figurine and his secretary who was also his mistress, Eleanor Thornton. If this is not romantic enough, the story also contains an element of tragedy as Thornton died in 1915 while travelling to India and a German U-Boat sunk the ship she was travelling on,” says Didier, the managing director of Premier Carriage.

Yet, this is not all that there is to The Spirit of Ecstasy. In 2002, BMW bought Rolls Royce from Volkswagen. The latter decided to hold onto the rights of The Spirit of Ecstasy and later on, BWM had to cough up another 40 million dollars for the ornament.

He also mentions that when the first Rolls Royce was rolled out in 1904, the car had a 1.8-litre two-cylinder motor that could deliver 10 horsepower. Since then, a lot has changed when it comes to Rolls Royce, but it was also a long and sometimes twisted journey that often resulted in the most unexpected outcomes. For example, at some stage, the factory also delivered a 0.50 calibre machine gun. This was during WW II when all had to take hands to ensure that soldiers remain equipped.
“Today still more than half of all cars ever produced by Rolls Royce are present on the road. This is simply indicative of the exceptional quality you get when you opt to purchase a Rolls Royce,” Didier concluded.
