Impact of COVID-19 on the Infection Control Market
With the severe outbreak of COVID-19, there is unprecedented global demand for advanced healthcare facilities, services, and infrastructure to treat infected. As one of the core parts of healthcare, infection control products such as personal protective equipment are experiencing increasing demand from majority of the countries across the globe to handle a surge of COVID-19 patients. Healthcare workers rely on personal protective equipment to protect themselves and their patients from being infected and infecting others. However, with the drastically growing COVID-19 pandemic crisis, the available face masks and gowns capacity is not sufficient, and a global healthcare industry is experiencing shortfall in the numbers. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 89 million medical masks will be required every month. To meet that demand, a 40% increase in manufacturing is expected. The WHO also estimates that frontline workers would need approximately 7-10% of the world’s supply of surgical masks, and possibly more. For examination gloves, that figure goes up to 76 million, while international demand for goggles stands at 1.6 million per month.

China is the world’s largest producer and exporter of masks; the production of masks in normal years accounts for about 50% of the world’s output, 70% of which is for export. At present, China’s production of masks has increased more than 10 times to 120 million per day, but the global supply and demand gap of masks still cannot be alleviated. China now makes 200 million face masks a day, more than twenty times the amount it made at the start of February. Italy, the worst-hit country in Europe, is getting 8,00,000 face masks from South Africa, but it still needs at least 10 million more. Sales of medical masks are up by a staggering 319 percent. The purchases of household maintenance masks also drastically increased by 262 percent and aerosol disinfectants by 32 percent.

U.S.: MEDICAL SUPPLIES DISTRIBUTED FROM THE STRATEGIC NATIONAL STOCKPILE (APRIL 2020)

Item Number delivered or Currently being shipped
Surgical masks 26 million
Gloves 22 million
Face shields 5.2 million
Surgical gowns 4.3 million
Coveralls 132,000
Source: Foreign Exchange Management Act

Though the medical supplies are distributed from the stockpile, there is still shortage for the same. Moreover, due to the outbreak, there is slowdown in trade between countries. This slowdown in trade is disrupting the supply chains of many essential commodities needed for the fight. The list of such essential commodities includes COVID-19 testing kits, masks, alcohol-based sanitizers, personal protective equipment (PPEs), dress materials for frontline health workers, ventilators (breathing devices) for patients, etc. Thus, governments are undertaking measures to accelerate the manufacture of PPE in their own country which ultimately has an impact on the global infection control market. Some of the initiatives are mentioned below:

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak, the U.K. government has delivered over 761 million items of PPE to ensure the country’s frontline is protected. This has included 158 million masks, 1 million gowns, 135 million aprons, and 360 million pairs of gloves.
The U.S. imported protective masks of $203.1 million from China in February, a more than 20% drop from the $261 million worth of masks in the same month last year, according to a USA TODAY analysis on Census trade data.
In March 2020, Airbus (Netherlands) has deployed a new air-bridge flight between Europe and China to deliver additional face mask supplies to France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom health systems in support of the COVID-19 crisis efforts.
The U.S. government has urged U.S. manufacturers to ramp up mask production and allocated $16 billion in a coronavirus-relief package to build up the supply of masks, respirators, and other equipment in the national stockpile.
