The main aim of this project is to build 20 billion affordable houses for Urban Poor under PMAY-U and Rural Poor under PMAY-R and PMAY-G (Gramin). This scheme in conjunction with other schemes like Saubhagya Yojana electricity connection, Ujjwala Yojana LPG gas connection, Jan Dhan banking facilities, etc provides houses with basic amenities like toilet, electricity, LPG gas, drinking water, banking facilities, etc.

The houses built will be sustainable to endure the natural calamities like flood, earthquake, cyclone, landslides etc. adhering to the National Building Code and other relevant Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) codes.
The project has been approved to complete construction of 5 million rural houses by March 2018 and 10 million rural houses by March 2019.

It features to gain a subsidy of 6.5% from the government for beneficiaries on the loan availed for a period of 20 years. The houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana will be constructed through environment-friendly technologies, in order to balance the impact on the environment through this increased expansion and land pressure. According to PMAY Housing Scheme, the ground floor houses will be given to differently abled and old people on priority.

In order to achieve the envisioned goal by 2022, the Government of India will be assisting the project financially with 2 trillion INR. This mission has 4 main components. They being: Affordable Houses in Partnership with the private and public sector, Affordable Houses through Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS), Slum Redevelopment with private sector participation, and Beneficiary led house construction/enhancement.
