I remember being stranded in an airport in Louisville, KY several years ago. Due to hurricane force winds, flights were at a standstill and the airport was officially closed. Several of my friends and colleagues, also at the airport experienced the same challenge. Once they announced that the airport was closed until further notice, there wasn't any update for the customers at the boarding section I waited at. Although an attendant was there and people anxiously milled around, nothing was conveyed to give the customers peace of mind.

Boldly, I walked up to the ticket counter and spoke to the attendant, "Isn't there any news or encouragement you can give these people -anything at all, even to say you don't have news?" I mentioned another occurrence at the airport. When several of us heard about the airport closing, still exalted from our weekend of uplifting business seminars, friendship and spiritual connection, we formed a circle and offered up a unified prayer and intention of loving concern and for the safety of everyone. It elevated us and also engaged others. Strangers around us were in unison with our intent. They smiled and seemed to share in the goodwill imparted. The airport didn't open up any faster yet, I believe it made a difference and helped us and others navigate a long day with more patience and calm.

Although seemingly unrelated, these two incidents have common themes. When we recognize another person's viewpoint or situation with empathy, kindness and action, we create special moments and open up dialogue and deeds that help to pay the kindness forward.
