Exploring the Best Options for the Grand Piano

Posted November 1, 2018 by Pianoworks

Buying a piano is one of the most important investments for a pianist, since it is an instrument that will accompany us for a long time. To choose well we must analyze in detail the options we have, depending on our budget and our needs.

First, you have to decide between buying a vertical piano or buying a grand piano. Secondly, we have to decide if we will choose a new piano or a second-hand piano. Finally, there would be the brand and the level / range of the instrument.

1. What type of piano: vertical piano or piano de cola

At this point, obviously, our budget will influence. Both have very different prices. However, one of the determining factors will be space. If we can not dedicate to our piano the surface that it requires, the option would be a vertical piano. The vertical pianos can be coupled without problems next to a wall and take up much less space.

Between a grand piano and a vertical one, the differences begin in the mechanics. A well regulated and adjusted grand piano can be up to twice as fast in performance (number of repetitions per second of a single note) as a vertical piano. That is to say, that in theory it offers us a much higher performance and allows us a greater degree of expressiveness due to the precision of its mechanics. The design of the mechanism is different, the grand piano having the so-called "double exhaust" and on the other hand a different gravitation system, which benefits the mechanics of the grand piano when it is activated and returns the hammer that perches the string vertically , unlike the vertical piano that does it horizontally.

There are also differences that are of course aesthetic, but that go much further. The grand piano has not been developed and designed like that by chance. These non-coincidental differences with the vertical piano have to do with the length of the strings (especially where more importance is in the area of the bass) than having a longer length as well as more surface of soundboard and wider resonance box , they offer us more body, depth and sonority. On the other hand, the materials that are used in its manufacture influence, of course. To more quality, we improve benefits. In fact, there are vertical pianos such as the Steinway & Sons K-132 Pianos, of which Hinves Pianos are official distributors in Spain, which are superior to many grand pianos in the market of other manufacturers.
All these details add up and influence the sound, touch, timbre, performance or expressiveness that we can obtain from a piano.

Vertical pianos are classified by their height in studio, mid-range and professional pianos. Grand pianos are classified by their length in tail or quarter tail, half tail, three-quarter tail and grand tail or concert.

2. What to choose, a new or occasion piano

Sitting in front of a new piano, opening its lid and caressing its keys is a unique experience. From the first moment we printed our way of playing the instrument and started a new path together.
However, there are several reasons why buying a new piano may not be the best choice. The first one is its cost. The price of a new piano may be out of our budget, so an alternative would be a used or second hand piano that is on average 50% of its current value again.
