Irving, TX – It is estimated that 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease at present. Nailing down a specific number, however, is difficult thanks to problems presented in definitively diagnosing this condition prior to post-mortem autopsies. A new PET scan-based screening examination may soon change that.

The new screening measure involves the use of a special tracer that is used in conjunction with PET scans. The tracer is able to highlight the formation of amyloid plaque on the brain, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Although not 100 percent perfect, the test is hoped to increase the accurate diagnosis rate dramatically.

“Being able to more accurately diagnosis Alzheimer’s disease is important for paving the way for early interventions,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “This new test may very well provide the insight physicians need to ensure patients that would benefit from early Alzheimer’s interventions receive the treatments they need.”

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive form of dementia. It has not known cure at present, but some treatments have been devised to help slow its progress. The disease is characterized by the development of amyloid plaque on the brain, a condition heretofore difficult to determine without an autopsy. While some screening protocols do exist, they have an accuracy rate of about 70 to 80 percent when checked against post-mortem autopsies.

“When Alzheimer’s is the suspected diagnosis, early intervention is crucial for helping delay the disease’s progression,” says Dr. Echt. “This new protocol may make that possible while also providing patients and their families the answers they seek.”

How soon the screening procedure will be made available for widespread use remains unknown. Further testing is required. At present, the results are promising.
