The founder of PET/CT at Las Colinas talks about the benefits of routine screening.

Irving, TX, Nov – Routine, early cancer screenings are medical appointments many people may think they can skip. After all, if they feel healthy, they must be. The truth is these simple appointments are crucial for two big reasons. For those who get a clean bill of health, they can deliver peace of mind. For those who might have cause for concern, they can open the door to treatments that may very well prove lifesaving.

“There are many forms of cancer today that doctors can effectively treat and beat if they are able to catch them in their earliest stages,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “Prostate, breast and colorectal cancers, for example, are often highly treatable. Even some forms of lung cancer can be stopped in their tracks if detected soon enough. The key lies in going in for routine screenings; a step patients must choose to make for themselves.”

It is estimated 1.7 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in one form or another in the coming year. Some 500,000 people will suffer a cancer-related death. While early screening cannot guarantee positive outcomes in every case, these simple appointments are credited with saving many lives each year.

“The best bet is for people to sit down with their primary care physicians and access personal cancer risk factors,” says Dr. Echt. “From there, a doctor can make informed recommendations on what tests should be performed and when. Routine screening recommendations may vary based on a person’s age, gender, family history and lifestyle habits, such as smoking.”

Going to the doctor for routine screening is not something most people put on their top 10 lists of things they want to do. For those with early stage breast, lung, cervical, prostate and other forms of detectable cancer, however, the trip can be a lifesaver.
