PET scans are just one of many diagnostic tools healthcare providers have at their disposal for finding and staging prostate cancer.

Irving, TX – Men diagnosed with prostate cancer will find a variety of tests are used to stage the disease and assist healthcare professionals in laying out a treatment plan. While PET imaging isn’t always on the list of diagnostic tools used, researchers are finding this test may offer some advantages over others.

“Recent research shows that PET imaging may offer superior detection of metastatic prostate cancer,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “More accurately and readily diagnosing this form of prostate cancer is critical for ensuring proper treatment plans are put into action.”

Dr. Echt explains that many of the 200,000 American men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year face low risk forms of the disease. Since low risk cancers are slow growing, aggressive intervention isn’t always used. Instead, some men will find their cancer can be monitored without more invasive intervention at least for a time. Making sure that the cancer is truly low risk, however, is critical for outcomes.

“Recent studies have shown that PET scans can be especially helpful for detecting metastatic prostate cancer that may otherwise go undetected,” Dr. Echt says. “This screening tool was also shown to be more effective at finding lesions than traditional methods while also indicating concerns related to lymph nodes, the bones and visceral tissues.”

PET scans are just one of many diagnostic tools healthcare providers have at their disposal for finding and staging prostate cancer. Their use, studies have shown, may be especially beneficial for helping determine if cancer has reached a metastatic stage.

All men are at risk for the development of prostate cancer as they age. With that in mind, it is important for men to discuss their personal prostate cancer risks with their healthcare providers. Routine screening should begin around the age of 50.
