Irving, TX – For the 180,000 American men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, lifesaving treatments are readily available. From surgery and radiation to hormone therapy and beyond, medical science has moved ahead by leaps and bounds over the past few decades. Effective treatment, however, hinges on a physician having a complete understanding of a patient’s condition and its severity. This is where the PET/CT scan can stand head and shoulder above other diagnostic measures.

“A recent study shed light on the improved accuracy the PET/CT scan has in finding metastatic prostate cancer,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “This is incredibly important for patients and their doctors simply because the course of recommended action is likely to vary a great deal if a more aggressive, metastatic form of the disease is found. If it’s not discovered, however, treatments may fail to produce the desired outcome.”

The study in question paired a PET/CT scan with a radioactive tracer known as F-18-DCFBC. This method, researchers found, was much more accurate in finding metastatic prostate cancer than others. In fact, the PET/CT scans found 592 positive lesions versus 520 detected by other methods in the study.

“Improving diagnostic accuracy is critical for improving patient outcomes,” says Dr. Echt. “This particular diagnostic combination appears to do just that, offering hope for those who have more aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Accurate diagnosis is simply essential for laying out a treatment plan that is most likely to address a patient’s full needs.”

Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer should speak with their healthcare providers about all diagnostic tests ordered and treatments recommended. The best course of action for diagnosis and treatment will depending on the particulars of an individual patient’s case.
