A Radiologist explains the various uses of PET imaging in oncology.

Irving, TX – April 30, 2020 – PET (positron emission tomography) uses radiotracers, a computer, and a special camera to evaluate tissue and organ functions in the body. It can detect changes at the cellular level and help to detect the onset of cancer. When combined with computed tomography, doctors can clearly identify abnormal metabolic activities in the body to provide accurate cancer diagnoses.

“PET-CT offers plenty of benefits in disease imaging," said a radiologist. "It can help to diagnose, evaluate, or treat different types of cancers, heart disease, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal, and many other abnormalities. The scan can pinpoint molecular activity and identify cancer early."

Here are uses of PET-CT imaging;

• It is used to detect and diagnose cancer
• It can help oncologists determine whether cancer has spread to other body parts
• It helps to assess if treatment is effective
• It can be used to determine if cancer has recurred after treatment
• Doctors use PET-CT to evaluate a patient’s prognosis
• PET-CT helps to assess tissue viability and metabolism
• Through PET-CT scans, doctors can determine the effects of a heart attack myocardial infarction in areas of the heart
• PET-CT imaging can help to identify heart muscle areas that can benefit from angioplasty
• It can help to evaluate brain abnormalities like tumors, seizures, and memory disorders.

PET-CT scanning is a non-invasive, painless outpatient procedure. The radiotracer used (F-18 Fluorodeoxyglucose or FDG) accumulates in tumors or binds to specific proteins in the body. Since cancer cells are metabolically active, they will absorb the glucose in the radiotracer and light up on the scan. This will allow the doctor to identify cancer and its location.

"Before undergoing PET-CT scan, you should talk to your doctor first to understand if the procedure is safe for you or not," continued the radiologist. "You should discuss your medical condition, the medications you are currently using, and your allergies to avoid complications."
