Irving, TX – April 30, 2020 – PET (positron emission tomography) uses radiotracers, a computer, and a special camera to evaluate tissue and organ functions in the body. It can detect changes at the cellular level and help to detect the onset of cancer. When combined with computed tomography, doctors can clearly identify abnormal metabolic activities in the body to provide accurate cancer diagnoses.

PET-CT scanning is a non-invasive, painless outpatient procedure. The radiotracer used (F-18 Fluorodeoxyglucose or FDG) accumulates in tumors or binds to specific proteins in the body. Since cancer cells are metabolically active, they will absorb the glucose in the radiotracer and light up on the scan. This will allow the doctor to identify cancer and its location.
