Rupert was a 10 month old Heinz 57 pup. We put lots of time into k9 dog training teaching him how to sit and come and stay. Rupert would even do a bunch of tricks like roll over, high fives and speak. In normal circumstances Rupert would listen to and obey our commands but dog owners around the world know that you and your dog aren’t always in normal circumstances.

We had Rupert outside playing ball and were having a great time, we would throw the ball as far as we could and Rupert would bring it back, until the one time that he didn’t. We were in a fairly big park and Rupert had just run full tilt to the ball which I had thrown about 75 yards away when he got sight of another dog sitting on the lawn across the street from the park.
Suddenly the ball didn’t matter and the command “come” that I was shouting didn’t matter.
Rupert was distracted by the other dog and nothing was going to stop him running over to say hello.

I watched as he cleared the park and started heading for the road. At the same time I saw a pick up truck coming down the street right at him. I screamed louder but Rupert was distracted, he as on a mission, and nothing was going to stop him – except the truck. As Rupert ran into the road, I watched in slow motion as the driver of the truck reached down to fiddle with something in his truck and I knew he was not going to stop. And he didn’t. It was one of the most horrifying things I have ever seen, our little pup being run over by a truck. In the end,
After spending over $10,000.00 on vet bills, Rupert recovered from his massive injuries and lived to be 15 years old, he was our perfect dog for life.

The point of this story is that Rupert, although trained to a certain degree, did not have K9 distraction training – if he did, I know that this accident would not have happened, he would have come running back to us when we called. K9 distraction training is the process of “proofing” your dog so that regardless of what distractions are competing for your dog’s attention, he will pay attention to and obey your commands. Of all the things that your pup will learn during dog training classes or dog obedience training, K9 distraction training is probably the most important final step. Even if your dog is fully trained to obey your commands you need to make sure that your pal has had K9 distraction training, or proofing, so that it will obey your commands when it matters most.

Regardless of what training journey you take with your dog or which professional dog trainer you decide to hire, always make sure that K9 distraction training is included in you dofg training program. K9 distraction training will keep your dog safe and may just save you a lot of money in the long run.
