You know the size and age of dog that you want and how much time you are willing to put into training and maintenance. Now you need to consider what breed of dog will be your Perfect Dog For Life.

Dog Breeds

It is undeniable that purebred dogs are popular and that people are attracted to specific dog breeds for a variety of reasons. It could be that you grew up with a particular breed or that you have spent a lot of around a specific dog breed. It could be that you are smitten by the way a particular type of dog looks and acts or perhaps you just feel that the breed you are interested in is right for you based on what you have read, seen in videos or TV shows or heard about from friends or family.

If you decide on getting a purebred dog make sure you thoroughly research the breed that you are interested in. Be very sure that you are willing to accept the potential challenges with temperament, grooming, and health problems. Make sure that the breed is appropriate for your family and lifestyle, which includes any other dogs or pets in your household. Once you have made up your mind on your purebred dog breed you must be vigilant is your research to find a responsible, ethical and professional dog breeder. We want to emphasize that you should do lots of research before purchasing any dog from a breeder.

Mutts, foops, Heinz 57, whatever you want to call them, a mixed-breed dog just might be your Perfect Dog For Life. The combination of two or more dog breeds will often balance out personality traits and physical characteristics. With a mixed-breed dog you must expect the unexpected, especially if you adopt a “pound puppy.” Other than expensive DNA testing, there is no way of knowing exactly how your puppy will look when it grows up and it is difficult to determine any future health problems. There are many canine experts that believe that mixed-breed dogs end up with fewer health problems than purebred dogs.

In general mixed-breeds tend to be good-natured and intelligent. You should also consider that if you adopt a mixed-breed dog you may very well be saving that dog from euthanasia or from a lonely life in a shelter!
